If you’re diverting your attention to more mundane issues now that the General Election is over…not so fast. San Jose City Council members decided to call a special election to fill the seat in District 4 left vacant when Kansen Chu was elected to the State Assembly. The Special Election is set for April 7th, with a runoff (if needed) expected in June. Chu’s council term doesn’t expire until 2016, the district covers Berryessa and surrounding areas in north San Jose.
But this doesn’t mean the seat will necessarily be left vacant until the election. Council members expressed an interest in appointing someone to fill the seat temporarily after the January 9th deadline for candidates to file for the race. That way, they avoid appointing someone who would be able to run with the advantage of incumbency.
Ironically, Chu was elected to City Council in a similar situation, when Chuck Reed left the seat to become Mayor midway through his second term on the Council in 2006.
