There are three seats up for election in the Evergreen School District, and interested candidates have already thrown their hats into the ring. Trustee Jim Zito – a conservative vote on the Board- and his ally Trustee Balaji Venkatraman are both campaigning to be reelected, while Board President Sylvia Alvarez has decided to step down when her term expires later this year. The re-election of the two incumbents is far from a certainty. Venkatraman was first appointed to the Board in 2010 only to lose his campaign to retain the seat two years later. He also lost a bid in 2014. The Board then reappointed him to another vacancy created when Sylvia Arenas left the Board to join City Council in 2016.
Three non-incumbents have joined the race: Marisa Hanson, Chris Corpus and Patti Andrade. Hanson is a respected teacher, parent and former President of the East Side Teachers Association. Corpus is a member of the San Jose Planning, Building and Code Enforcement Task Force and served many years as principal in various schools in the district. Andrade, a relative newcomer, is a parent as well as Quimby PTSA President & Sixth District PTA Director of Legislative Action.
Evergreen teachers, hoping to move Evergreen School District in a more positive direction, have endorsed Andrade, Corpus, and Hanson so this is bound to be a competitive race.
