There are two candidates vying for the open 17th Senate District seat. The position is currently held by Bill Monning who is terming out in 2020.
The front runner, John Laird, is a former Santa Cruz City Council Member, a former State Assembly Member and most recently served as the State Secretary for Natural Resources under Governor Jerry Brown.
His opponent, Kevin Saunders, is a former Marina mayoral candidate with a checkered history. In 2014 he was served with a restraining order after his expulsion from Monterey College of Law. In 2016 he wrote an arguably anti-Semitic rant against a reporter. And in 2018 he missed a deadline to file campaign papers because he was in jail on charges that he threatened and stalked a witness in a case. Unless there is stiffer competition, Laird should take this one.
