Senator Jim Beall is termed out in 2020 and his soon-to-be vacant seat is attracting a number of political heavy weights. First on the list is Dave Cortese. Cortese, who is termed out of his Supervisorial seat in 2020, is no stranger to the political scene. He is a former San Jose Council Member, served for eight years as a trustee for the East Side Union High School District and while at the County, has championed the issues of working families and immigrant rights.
Another County Supervisor considering the race is Ken Yeager who termed out of office in 2018. Yeager, co-founder of the Bay Area Municipal Elections Committee (BAYMEC), is a lifelong advocate for the region’s LGBTQ community and during his time at the County, prioritized public health policies. Prior to being elected to the Board of Supervisors, he served on the San Jose-Evergreen Community College board and on the San Jose City Council.
Next on the list is Ann Ravel, a serious candidate who filed papers to run last week. Ravel, who was appointed to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) by President Barack Obama, served as the commission’s chair. Prior to joining the FEC, Ravel served as chair of the California Fair Political Practices Commission and as Santa Clara County Counsel.
Another candidate who has openly talked about running is Nora Campos, former San Jose City Council Member and State Assembly Member. This would be Campos’s second attempt at winning this seat, her first being an unsuccessful 2016 bid to unseat Beall.
Rounding out the list is San Jose City Council Member Johnny Khamis. Khamis is by far the most conservative of the candidates running for the seat and consistently votes against pro-worker policies at the city level.
