Jerry Hill, who represents the 13th Senate District, is terming out in 2020, and candidates are lining up for the chance to take the open seat.

Becker previously served on Governor Jerry Brown’s California State Workforce Development Board, serves on the Child Care Partnership Council in San Mateo County and is a founding Trustee at the University of California Merced. In 2016, Becker launched a campaign to run for state Assembly, but withdrew from the race due to a family medical emergency.
Next on the list is Sally Lieber, former Mountain View City Council Member and former California State Assembly Speaker pro Tempore. During her time in the Assembly, Lieber authored an increase in the state minimum wage, led on environmental protection issues and championed legislation to combat human trafficking. Currently, she serves as an advisor to the San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority.
Shelly Masur, a Redwood City Council Member has also thrown her hat into the race. During her time on Council she has spearheaded efforts to raise the minimum wage, increase childcare facilities and expand community outreach on affordable housing. Prior to being on the City Council, Masur served for 10 years on the Redwood City School Board, including two terms as Board President. Masur is currently the CEO of Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation, a statewide education non-profit working on policy implementation.
Rounding out the list is Michael Brownrigg, a City of Burlingame Council Member. Prior to his life in politics, Brownrigg was in the Foreign Service where he worked as a diplomat. He then went to an investment firm and co-founded Total Impact Capital. In 2001 Brownrigg was appointed to the Burlingame City Planning Commission and in 2009 won his bid for City Council, where he has served two terms as mayor. Currently, Brownrigg serves as an advisor to Middle Bridge Capital, a fund he co-founded in 2018.
