Supervisors Cindy Chavez and Susan Ellenberg are prioritizing hazard pay for local grocery store workers. Similar to Los Angeles and Seattle, Santa Clara County is poised to adopt a policy that requires retailers to provide additional hourly compensation for retail clerks. As COVID-19 infection rates among grocery store workers skyrocket, hazard pay is necessary compensation for the daily risks associated with going to work. The referral also asks the staff to report back on the applicability of the ordinance to fast food establishments in the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County.
The item is scheduled to be heard today at the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors meeting. A similar ordinance has been introduced by Councilman Sergio Jimenez in the City of San Jose.
