Conservatives have a well-documented history of engaging in voter suppression, and rank choice voting is no exception. Therefore, it is no surprise that John Arnold, the Enron crook and funder of conservative causes, is supporting rank choice voting.
One of the primary criticisms of rank choice voting is that it makes the voting process more intricate and tedious. When voter turnout, especially in under-represented communities, is already a challenge, adding a layer of complexity, making voting less intuitive for first-time voters, and creating the possibility of higher confusion, only makes citizens less likely to vote.
In addition, states that have switched to rank choice voting have experienced an uptick in voting errors and spoiled ballots, both of which further undermine and reduce the vote. It’s no wonder conservatives back this method of voting.
