Today, the Santa Clara City Council will vote to make an appointment to the Council seat vacated by Dominic Caserta last month. To pass, the appointment must receive five of the remaining six Council members’ votes.
The City Charter gives the Council two options in case of a Council seat vacancy: either appoint or hold a special election. If an appointment is to take place, it must be done within 30 days of the vacancy, after which a special election is mandatory. Based on the cost of Sunnyvale’s special election last year, it is estimated that it would cost Santa Clara approximately $800,000 to conduct their special election.
There were 24 individuals who applied, but at the time of the meeting’s agenda publication only 18 people were eligible. Below are some of the highlights:

- Nancy A. Biagini, lifelong working families activist and dedicated Santa Clara advocate
- David Anderson, respected long-time music teacher at Santa Clara Unified School District
- Sudhanshu (Suds) Jain, current Santa Clara Planning Commissioner
- Mohammed Nadeem, serial Santa Clara Council candidate
- Hosam Haggag, drafter of recently failed Measure A and engaged citizen
