Dave Cortese Wins Decisive Victory Over Ann Ravel for State Senate

If you’re wondering how much Uber and Lyft will pay to buy a ride to Sacramento, the answer is millions of dollars. In the closely watched and hotly contested election for California State Senate, Supervisor Dave Cortese emerged victorious over untested challenger Ann Ravel. Despite unlimited corporate cash in support of his opponent, Cortese received nearly 55% of the vote to Ravel’s 45%.

The expensive race, which pitted two Democrats against one another, was the costliest of any California State Senate race, with millions of dollars flowing to produce an onslaught of television and print advertising. Cortese, the progressive, worker-friendly candidate, received support from the California Democratic Party, Organized Labor, and Carl Guardino. Ravel, the moderate corporate candidate, received support from the California Chamber of Commerce, Sam Liccardo, and Johnny Khamis, whose weak showing has some wondering about his ability to win future races.

Cortese, who is set to be sworn in on December 7th, will replace termed-out State Senator Jim Beall. Some of the major issues Cortese plans on addressing in Sacramento include solutions to the affordable housing crisis, mental health parity, and slowing climate change. The 15th Senate District encompasses Campbell, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, San Jose and Saratoga.
