A 21st Century Contract for the 21st Century Economy

AT&T West workers in California and Nevada, members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), are currently bargaining for a “fair contract.” Their existing collective bargaining agreement expired on April 9, 2016, and they have been without a contract ever since.

Even in a constantly changing industry like telecommunications and entertainment, AT&T has been able to adapt to change and continues to be a successful company. Their success can be attributed to the consumers and communities who have allowed AT&T to become a leader for economic growth. And as such, AT&T has a responsibility to give back to those communities.

Providing good, middle class jobs and preventing the outsourcing of work are critical issues for all working families, especially for those at AT&T. With the high cost of living in the Bay Area as well as rising health care costs, it’s critical that workers are provided with higher pay and benefits to support themselves and their families. These are just a few of many issues that CWA would like to see addressed in the current contract negotiations. And frankly, AT&T should give this to their nearly 16,000 workers in California and Nevada who are deserving of a fair contract.

AT&T has been successful in averting the economic difficulties plaguing other businesses and it is important to recognize that the workforce of AT&T allows for this to be possible.  It’s imperative that this is reflected in the contract that is bargained.

A solid economic recovery will not be possible without reliable, working class jobs and it’s up to successful companies like AT&T to be an industry leader by ensuring that these jobs are created and maintained for their hardworking employees. The tens of thousands of workers at AT&T West deserve a fair share in the company’s profitability and future. I’m confident that AT&T West will bargain a fair agreement with these workers and continue to lead in our nations’ economic recovery.
