Cannibalism is an unusual tactic in political campaigns, but that is what we are seeing in the campaign to elect Kevin Jensen Sheriff. The Deputy Sheriffs Association (DSA) and Correctional Peace Officers Association (CPOA), which are running the Jensen campaign in the absence of any real campaign by Jensen himself, have attacked Sheriff Laurie Smith with mail that blames her for the misconduct of … guess who? Yes, they blame Sheriff Smith for the misconduct of their own members.
The mail piece cites three “gross blunders,” two involving mistakes investigating cases and one involving an NFL football player who was arrested and bailed out of jail faster than most defendants. Whether these cases actually involved “gross blunders” or not, the mailer is bizarre.
Campaigns often reveal a lot about the character of the campaigner. Apparently, the people running the Jensen campaign hate Laurie Smith with such a passion that they have lost touch with reason. What else can explain their decision to send a county wide mailer about their own screw ups?
