The Mercury News: San Jose firefighters injured while battling blaze at home

SAN JOSE – A veteran firefighter fell into a basement and was injured while battling a blaze on New Year’s Eve at a home near Roosevelt Park in San Jose, authorities said.

The fire was reported about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at a single-family residence on the 100 block of 16th Street, between Santa Clara and St. James streets, said San Jose fire spokeswoman Erica Ray.

Ray said the injured firefighter, a 23-year veteran of the department, was rushed to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Deputy Fire Chief Don Torres visited the colleague at the hospital and reported that the firefighter is recovering.

No one else was injured.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by about 3:35 p.m., Ray said.

No one was home when the fire started, said Ray, adding that the cause remains under investigation. The blaze displaced five residents, all of whom were staying with relatives.
