Chamber of Commerce Attack Ads: Plentiful and Pitiful

While attack ads are not uncommon in the world of political races, the level of negative campaigning by the Chamber of Commerce in the San Jose City Council primary and the weakness of the attacks is unprecedented.

The Chamber has spent a whopping $120,000 on attack ads so far, and there is still over a month to the election. Yesterday’s financial reports showed that $80,000 is being allocated solely to target District 8 candidate Joshua Barousse.  The Chamber is spending an additional $40,000 to attack Sergio Jimenez.

The content of the attacks comes as even more of a surprise than the cost.  The Chamber is hitting Barousse over a ticket for texting while driving and for driving solo in a carpool lane.  While voters probably agree that Mr. Barousse should not have done those things, many of them have probably committed the same offenses.  In fact, it’s likely that some of the Chamber staff and Board leadership have committed those offenses too.
