San Jose Unified School District Board Races are Taking Shape

The San Jose Unified School Board is going to see changes come the November election.  Having made it to the runoff for Santa Clara County Supervisor District 4, Board President Susan Ellenberg will not run for reelection to the School Board.  This vacancy has led to a faceoff between Helen Chapman and Peter Allen for Trustee Area 2. Chapman is a staffer for San Jose Councilmember Sergio Jimenez and former Chair of San Jose’s Parks and Recreation Commission. Allen is a political consultant who, until recently, served as the public information officer for the San Jose Unified School District. They ran against each other for San Jose City Council District 6 in 2016.  Allen lost in the primary.  Chapman made it to the runoff but lost there to Dev Davis. Rounding out the list of folks running for Trustee Area 2 is newcomer Jose Magaña, a teacher and apparent charter school advocate, having been a Teach for America Corps member and then serving as an instructional coach for incoming Teach for America teachers.

Trustee Area 4 is also up for election.  The position is currently held by Michael Melillo who, upon the resignation of Paymon Zarghami, was appointed to the seat earlier this year. Melillo is being challenged by Brian Wheatley, an educator with more than 30 years of experience, an activist and the President of the Evergreen Teachers Association.
