Number of Candidates Running for Cupertino City Council Grows

Cupertino has a growing number of folks interested in having their names on the ballot for City Council this November. Mayor Darcy Paul and Councilmember Savita Vaidhyanathan are running for reelection, while Councilmember Barry Chang is termed out at the end of the year. Paul, who in the past has been critical of development, particularly the massive Valco project, but has moved in a more moderate direction, finds himself competing with two slates.

Better Cupertino, a community group that has been critical of development, backs  Liang Chao and Jon Willey.  Liang Chao serves on the Cupertino Union School Board.  Willey, a longtime Cupertino resident and basketball coach at the YMCA & National Junior Basketball Association, is known for representing concerns about over-sized City development projects. The Better Cupertino slate aligns with sitting Councilmember Steven Scharf.

The other slate consists of conservative former Mayor Orrin Mahoney, Councilmember Vaidhyanathan and Hung Wei, a well-respected Fremont Union High School District Trustee. The Mahoney, Vaidhyanathan, Wei slate aligns with sitting Councilmember Rod Sinks.  All tend to be receptive to local development.

Rounding out the list is Tara Sreekrishnan is a progressive community leader who has worked as a legislative aide, was a Cupertino school music teacher and serves on the Friends of Deer Hollow Farm’s Board of Directors.

Cupertino’s Councilmembers are elected at-large, meaning that the top three vote-getters will earn a spot on the City Council.
