Mayor Sam Liccardo and Vice Mayor Chappie Jones are trying to mitigate the intense backlash that came from their decision to appoint Pierluigi Oliverio, yet another white person from Willow Glen, to the Planning Commission. With the appointment of Oliverio, currently four out of the seven Commissioners are from affluent District 6.
Liccardo and Jones have been feeling the heat from Council Members and the community, since there were two other highly qualified non-white finalists representing downtown and the east side who could have been appointed. Under pressure from their Council colleagues, the Mayor and Vice Mayor, put out a memo yesterday limiting the number of Commissioners who come from the same Council District and only allowing Commissioners to be reappointed once. Council Members Maya Esparza and Magdalena Carrasco, neither of whom supported the appointment of Oliverio, also signed the memo.
