Wage Theft and Displacement Issues Prioritized by Mountain View City Council

Last night, the Mountain View City Council voted on its policy priorities for the year. More than 50 community advocates and local leaders showed up to testify before Council, and there was a strong sense of solidarity between labor and community allies, both of whom backed prioritizing displacement and wage theft issues.

The top priority voted on by Council was holding a study session on displacement to develop strategies to prevent net loss of affordable housing and mitigate the damage displacement has on its residents. Second on the list of priorities was developing a wage theft policy to protect workers from illegal exploitation in all industries, including a Responsible Construction Ordinance for private development.

The Council also moved to develop a Community Workforce Agreement as a way to protect workers on jobsites and increase access to construction jobs for local community residents. In addition, they wanted to conduct a study session on the service gaps related to homelessness. Rounding out the list of priorities was partnering with school districts to enhance afterschool programs.

The above items were prioritized as part of the City’s “Goal 1: Protecting Vulnerable Populations.” They also prioritized important issues related to housing, transportation and environmental sustainability.
