Who Will Step Up to Fill Assembly Member Chu’s Seat?

Yesterday’s surprising announcement that Assembly Member Kansen Chu will make a play for Supervisor Dave Cortese’s open seat instead of seeking re-election has left folks wondering who will step up to be the next Assembly Member.

Anna Song, the most seasoned member of the Santa Clara County Office of Education, is rumored to be interested. Song, with years of experience in nonprofit work, counseling, youth education, domestic violence intervention and fair housing enforcement, would be a heavy weight in the race. She was the first Korean-American to be elected in Santa Clara County, the first Korean-born female to be elected in California’s history and is the longest serving Korean-American elected official in the United States- all of which could serve her well in an Assembly district that is more than fifty percent Asian.

Also rumored to be considering a run for the seat are Milpitas City Vice Mayor Karina Dominguez and Fremont Vice Mayor Raj Salwan.
