Gilroy City Council will have three seats up for election, and to date, there are six candidates eyeing those seats. Current Council Members Fred Tovar and Carol Marques are seeking reelection. First on the list of candidates who have joined the race is Rebeca Armendariz, a fourth-generation Gilroy resident and well- known community activist. Armendariz served as a member of the Gilroy Planning Commission from 2016-2020 and is a former member of the Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee. She currently serves as a Housing Advisory Representative for the Housing Advisory Committee. Reid Lerner, an architect by trade, is the current Vice Chair of the Housing Advisory Committee and former president of the Downtown Business Association. He also ran for Council in 2016. Next on the list is Danny Mitchell, a long-time Gilroy resident. Mitchell has served as vice chair of operations and finance for the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce for the last three years, as well as serving on the Gilroy General Plan Advisory Committee for 2040. Rounding out the list is Zachary Hilton. Hilton serves as the Chair of the Gilroy Bicycle Pedestrian Commission and is a firefighter/paramedic for the Oakland Fire Department. The City of Gilroy elects their councilmembers at-large, so the three Council seats will go to the top three voter-getters.
