Two Incumbents Vie to be Sunnyvale’s First Directly Elected Mayor

The current Sunnyvale Mayor and Vice Mayor are battling to be the city’s first directly elected Mayor. At the March 3, 2020 election, City voters approved changing to a district-based electoral system for selecting City Council Members, with an elected Mayor.

Mayor Larry Klein was elected to Council in August of 2016, and re-elected to his seat in November of the same year. In January of 2020, Klein was selected as Sunnyvale’s Mayor. He currently sits on the Cities Association of Santa Clara County Board of Directors, the VTA State Route 85 Corridor Policy Advisor Board and is a member of the Association of Bay Area Governments.

Council Member Nancy Smith was elected to office in November 2016 and was named Vice Mayor in January 2020. She serves as the City’s representative to the Water Commission of Valley Water, is on the Caltrain Modernization Local Policy Makers Group and serves as Vice Chair of the Silicon Valley Clean Energy Authority. She also serves as the chair of the League of California Cities Women’s Caucus.
