** It seems we missed the last minute entry of Robert Varich, Moreland School District Trustee, vying for appointment to the Area 3 spot.
UPDATE: Two more names were added to the list of candidates vying for appointment to Trustee Area 3: Rosemary Kamei, (mentioned below as a possibility) and Ramona Snyder, whose LinkedIn profile lists her current occupation as a flight attendant and a “wish coordinator” for the non-profit “Wish Upon a Wedding.”
The deadline to apply for appointment to the vacant seat in Area 3 is today at 5 o’clock. So far there are two names submitted. Former District 9 San Jose City Councilmember from Judy Chirco who also served on the Cambrian School Board prior to her council tenure, has put thrown her name in the ring. The other candidate is Debbie Rocha, a dance teacher at Yerba Buena High School and mother of current District 9 City Councilmember Don Rocha.
“I think my mom would be a very effective public official,” Rocha told The Left Hook. “Her years of experience as a teacher would offer her an effective and unique vantage point for the board position. Plus she is a wonderful person and has a heart bigger than anyone I know.”
Another name floating around, though not yet submitted, is Rosemary Kamei, Executive Director of the non-profit, Building Futures Now, which mentors students in underserved communities in the Ravenswood School District of East Palo Alto. Prior to that position, Kamei was with the Silicon Valley Education Foundation.
The appointment may come down to where the candidates stand on charter schools, which may not bode well for Chirco, with her long time interest in charter schools dating back to her involvement with PACT. The weight of the County Board of Education seems to be shifting away from the rubber stamp for charters that it used to be. The BOE has denied appeals for several charter schools in recent months.
Trustee Area 3 became vacant last week when Leon Beauchman resigned. The provisional appointee will serve until the term of office of the vacant seat expires in November 2016.
