Superior Court Issues Map of New Santa Clara Election Districts and Designates Districts 2 and 3 for City Council Election

Yesterday’s decision by the Superior Court to create a six district electoral map in Santa Clara was followed-up by an amended Order, released today, that addresses the “sequencing” of district elections. The newly created districts that will be up for election are Districts 2 and 3.  As with other cities that use the district-based electoral system, candidates for Santa Clara City Council must be residents of Districts 2 and 3, and only voters in Districts 2 and 3 will be able to elect City Council members in the upcoming November election. Additionally, today’s Order reiterates the state law closing the official nomination period for the Santa Clara elections on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 5:00 p.m., leaving potential candidates with little more than two weeks to file nomination papers.

The new map, along with other information on the case, can be found here.
