Liccardo Attends Cesar Chavez Celebration Amid Racist Stereotyping of Immigrants

Mayor Sam Liccardo attended and spoke at San Jose’s annual Cesar Chavez Breakfast despite having recently made statements perpetuating the racist stereotype that immigrants, particularly those of Latino descent, are dangerous criminals.

In reference to Santa Clara County’s policy of requiring a lawful reason to jail people when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) requests a hold, the Mayor issued this statement to the press: “It is long overdue for the County to reconsider its current policy of ignoring ICE hold for predatory felons.”  As a number of immigrant rights leaders have pointed out, the Mayor’s demagoguery plays on racist stereotypes that are factually untrue and that incite hatred towards immigrant communities.

Liccardo’s appearance at the Chavez event surprised many in the Latino community who see Cesar Chavez as an advocate for human rights, justice and equity.
