Santa Clara County Democratic Party Passes Resolution in Support of Placing the Fair Elections Initiative on November Ballot

Yesterday, the Santa Clara County Democratic Party passed a resolution in support of placing the Fair Elections Initiative (FEI) on the November ballot. The resolution calls on the City of San Jose to find the roughly 3,000 petition signatures lost by the City Clerk “or, failing that, the San Jose Council must place the FEI on the November 2020 ballot.”

The resolution also calls for an investigation into the matter, “in order to determine precisely how this failure occurred, what reforms must be made in order to ensure that it never happens again, and who should be held accountable.”

In February of this year, a community coalition turned in nearly 100,000 signatures to the San Jose City Clerk, of which approximately 3,000 were lost before arriving at the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters office. The Fair Elections Initiative would reform San Jose elections by reducing the influence of special interest money in campaigns for Mayor and City Council and by increasing voter participation in mayoral elections.
