As city employee unions quietly work with city leaders to fix Mayor Reed’s illegal pension measure, which is driving away police, some city council members are playing political games with public safety.
Tuesday, Council Member Pierluigi Oliverio will bring this recommendation (item 3.6 on the agenda) to the Council, to set aside 40% of the City General Fund for police services.
In a letter from Police union President Jim Unland to the Mayor and City Council, Unland took a rather unconventional path to make his point:
No matter how much money is thrown at the police department, the city will not attract and retain officers if Measure B isn’t fixed. Because of Measure B, the city cannot fill open police positions, and half of the graduating class from the city’s last police academy have already left for jobs elsewhere. We need a sales tax measure and pension reform. We don’t need politicians who play games with public safety.
