City Council Seat? Let Me Write a Check For That

Now that campaign finance reports are out for the end of the Primary season, we can see just what kinds of games candidates are playing to make themselves look successful.

Take the case of San Jose City Council District One candidate Charles “Chappie” Jones.  Campaign reports show that Jones loaned his campaign $19,356 last spring.  At the time, his opponent Assemblymember Paul Fong had raised roughly $15,000 which was pretty close to Jones’s pre-loan amount of $16,000.  That extra $19K made it look like Chappie had raised more than he really did.  According to campaign reports, Jones waited until after the primary election to forgive that $19K loan, making it a contribution of his own money…to his campaign.  #TryingToBuyHisWayIntoOffice.

Keeping tabs on another city council candidate who did something similar during the 2014 Primary, District 3 candidate Don Gagliardi “loaned” his campaign $10,000 in December of 2013. He made another $10,000 loan sometime between May 18, 2014 and June 30, 2014.  Then, after the June Primary election he forgave both loans.  #AlsoTryingTo BuyHisWayIntoOffice.  These reports came out just a few days ago, while most people were enjoying the summer and not thinking about the campaigns.  But we’re keeping track for you.  You’re welcome.
