Support Prop 47

Council hero Ash Kalra wants to try and change the misguided minds of his dais foes on Proposition 47, the state measure that would reduce the classification of most “non-serious and nonviolent property and drug crimes” from a felony to a misdemeanor. Since Mayor Chuck Reed and his allies on the City Council make up the majority, they get to rule things on the Rules Committee.  That committee recently decided on recommendations for the various state propositions on the November ballot, one of them being a “NO vote on Prop. 47.  Under that law, things like shoplifting, bad check writing, and personal drug use would no longer be considered felonies.  Some 10,000 state prison inmates would be eligible for resentencing, and the measure is expected to save the state an estimated $150 million to $250 million per year.

Kalra plans to bring out the list of high profile people who are on his side in supporting Prop 47 including former San Jose Police Chief Bill Lansdowne (who co-authored the measure), District Attorney Jeff Rosen and a string of celebrities led by Brad Pitt and rapper Jay-Z.
