What did Mayor Reed know and when did he know it? Those are the questions now arising from an ethics scandal set off by the Mayor’s longtime political strategist, Victory Ajlouny.
Former San Jose Police Officer Aaron Ettinger is speaking out about being approached by Ajlouny and asked to falsely claim he was encouraged to quit the San Jose Police Department. Ajlouny then offered to get Mayor Reed involved to get his job back with the department.
In a declaration made under penalty of perjury, Ettinger said:

Ettinger quit the police department shortly after graduating the academy, he says, because he was concerned about the effects of Measure B, the pension reform measure that was ultimately declared to be illegal. Ettinger said he felt he couldn’t afford to work in a department where his disability would not be guaranteed. But Ettinger says he told Ajlouny that Police Officer Association President Jim Unland never encouraged him to quit.
Ettinger says Ajlouny promised to help him get his job back if he made the untrue accusation about Unland. He said Ajlouny told him to ask the police department for his job back and if they refused, then Ajlouny would arrange a meeting with Mayor Reed and an attorney.
Ettinger says he refused Ajlouny’s offers. The San Jose Police Officers Association is calling for an investigation into the matter, which at this point should include what role Mayor Chuck Reed played in trying to discredit the police officer association president.
