Ajlouny Lawyer All But Admits to Client’s Ethical Misstep

The plot thickens in the ethics scandal involving Mayor Reed’s political strategist Victor Ajlouny, with a tacit admission from Ajlouny that he did in fact encourage former Officer Aaron Ettinger to lie about whether the head of the police union was telling cadets to quit the department.

A letter from Ajlouny’s lawyer, Edward Kraus, asks Mr. Ettinger to retract statements he made to news media that Ajlouny told him he was trying to get POA  President Jim Unland fired, but never denied that Mr. Ajlouny called Ettinger and asked him to lie.

Ettinger spoke out yesterday saying Ajlouny called him in an attempt to get him to “collaborate” with him (Ajlouny) and dismissed police cadet Elyse Rivas who said Unland told cadets to “quit” the academy.  In the letter dated October 23, Ajlouny’s lawyer did not deny that assertion, only asking Ettinger to retract a statement about whether Ettinger wanted “to make some money.” Ms. Rivas later recanted her statement, telling a San  Jose Mercury News reporter Mr. Unland did not say the word “quit.”

The letter contains no denial that Ajlouny offered to set up a meeting with Mayor Reed and an attorney in an effort to reinstate Ettinger to a job he quit at the police department months before.

Ettinger maintained a log of the cell phone calls from Ajlouny and the fact that Ajlouny is not denying the accusations at the heart of the matter leads us to believe there may have been a recording of the conversations.
