Policy Watch: Your weekly tip sheet for what’s going on in your community.

San Jose:

  • Considering zoning changes to allow people to take perfectly good long term rental property and zone it for short term rental similar to AirBnB.  This could take affordable rental properties away from working families who can’t afford a $3000 studio downtown.
  • Earthquakes Stadium signage: Modifications to the Sign Code would allow additional/larger signs, including programmable electronic displays and video, at large outdoor stadiums that have a seating capacity for at least 16,000 or more people, as defined by the Ordinance.
  • Off-Sale of Alcohol at Grocery Stores – Develop a streamlined permit process for the off-sale of alcohol at grocery stores. (Off-sale: not consumed where it’s purchased)

  •  Granting an option to the Oakland A’s to purchase City-owned land near the Diridon train station.  The plan includes a purchase price of $7,000, 000. That’s a bigger steal than all of Rickey Henderson’s stolen bases put together.

  • Council will decide whether to adopt a medical marijuana proposal that weakens the restrictions council member voted on this past summer, or let the measure go to voters in 2016.

  •  Memo from Reed, Liccardo and Madison concerning relations with Vietnam.   These three want the federal government to give the city two weeks’ notice before any official visits from Vietnam are made in San Jose.  Too little, too late for Mayoral candidate Sam Liccardo to start courting the Vietnamese-American vote, especially after siding against most people in the community over the naming of “Little Saigon”.
