Even after 26 years, the feeling of giving holiday gifts to thousands of children in need never gets old. “You just can’t match it,” says Steve Preminger, Director of Working Partnerships USA’s Community Builders program and the Ring Leader of the Holiday Party for Kids.
The Party, put on every year at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, serves more than 6,000 children (that number is really higher, but by then they usually lose count) with games, food, music, and a visit with Santa. And every child goes home with a gift. (See a slide show of the Party here)
Every year the event is made possible by the enormous generosity of donors including ordinary citizens, labor unions and elected officials. Brand new, unwrapped gifts are in abundant supply. Santa Claus comes in different shapes, sizes, colors and genders as the object here is to make sure children get a Christmas wish.
Passing the golden anniversary of this special event, there is no end in sight. After spending a few days cleaning up the loose ends and distributing any leftover toys and gifts to organizations in need, the planning for the follow year starts again. And the good feelings of helping those who may otherwise not have anything to open Christmas morning last pretty much all year long.
