A Test for Mayor Liccardo’s Weight on SJ Council

Getting out ahead of Mayor Liccardo’s plan for immigrant residents, a new memo by Councilmembers Ash Kalra, Tam Nguyen, Magdalena Carrasco and Raul Peralez  calls for funding to help immigrants take advantage of President Obama’s recent executive order on immigration.  Last November, the President declared, through an executive order, various forms of temporary relief from deportation and work authorization for millions of immigrants in the U.S.

The freshmen three and Kalra are asking City staff to figure out a plan to establish a City Office of Immigrant Affairs and a way to coordinate services with Santa Clara County, which has already started work on the issue.  The foursome is also calling for City staff to come up with options to use current City resources and identify a role for staff from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services.

While still a council member, Mayor Liccardo suggested a role for the City to play without actually contributing resources.  Kalra and the new council members are pushing for more “concrete actions the city can undertake immediately” to help immigrant residents take advantage of the Administrative Relief process.  Given that this was Liccardo’s first initiative as Mayor, and right out of the blocks at least four council members are not siding with him, (probably five, if Rocha is included) it is apparent that a majority of the Council is not in the bag for the new Mayor for this, and potentially other Mayoral proposals.
