City immigrant services plan
Two separate requests for City staff to come up with a plan for making things easier for immigrants who qualify for relief from deportation under President Obama’s Executive Action – One relatively vague request by Mayor Liccardo, one more substantive from three freshman council members led by Ash Kalra asking for an Office of Immigrant Services, collaboration with Santa Clara County’s efforts already underway, and identifying specific resources within the City to dedicate to the effort to handle what is expected to be a flood of inquiries from thousands of San Jose residents.

Changes in Council Committees
The council will decide on Mayor Liccardo’s request to increase the number of council members on an open government committee to 5 and to allow other council members to address those committees, therefore flirting with Brown Act violations. The city manager will let the Council know how to get around that issue.

Planning Commission Vacancy
The City is recruiting for one position on the San José Planning Commission to fill an unexpired term ending June 30, 2016, left when former chair Matt Kamkar vacated the spot for business reasons. (The rumor is that he’s planning to work for newly elected SJ Council Member Chappie Jones.) Applicants to this Commission must have been both citizens of the United States and residents of the City of San José for one year preceding appointment, and additionally must be registered voters in the City of San José at the time of appointment.
Applications may be obtained from the Office of the City Clerk, City Hall, 200 East Santa Clara Street, Wing Building, 2nd Floor, San Jose, CA 95113, or you may apply online at: http://sanjoseca.gov/index.aspx?NID=330. Applications are due January 30, 2015 at 5:00 p.m.
East Side Union High School District
There’s a vacancy on the School Board, now that Magdalena Carrasco has been elected to San Jose City Council. 20 year old Anthony Phan, who ran unsuccessfully for a spot on the board last fall, is applying for an appointment to fill Carrasco’s open seat.
