The San Jose Police Department is Falling Apart

Our headline says it all.  The Left Hook has obtained a copy of the latest staffing plan for the San Jose Police department which shows a further gutting of relevant enforcement units needed to control crime in the once -“Safest Big City in America.”  A memo issued today from Police Chief Larry Esquivel orders the reassignment of officers to patrol from the Metro Unit (no more cracking down on prostitution), the Gang Suppression Unit (all of one officer left there), the Traffic Enforcement Unit (but don’t get excited about speeding and running stop signs,  they’ll still be on patrol).  Even officers running the San Jose Police Academy are being reassigned to patrol,. That’s not surprising since no one seems to be applying to become a police officer here.  You can see the several other reassignments in the memo here.  The changes start taking effect February 1st, phasing in over the next couple of months.  According to the memo, The Chief plans to “reassess” the changes later this year.
