County School Board Denies Charter Petition

The Santa Clara County Board of Education seems to be getting the message that it can’t just give a rubber stamp to charter schools.  This comes with the addition of new board member Claudia Rossi, elected last November.  Wednesday night, the Board unanimously denied the appeal of the Wei Yu Mandarin Immersion charter petition in West San Jose’s Moreland School District.Wei Yu International Charter School was hoping to create a K-8 public charter Mandarin immersion school in the district. The school also lost a petition to establish a similar school in Menlo Park last fall, and the San Mateo County School Board unanimously denied an appeal on that decision Wednesday night.

In Santa Clara County, members of the Moreland Teachers Association rallied support to defeat the petition, mobilizing parents and educators to convince the board to not rubber stamp this petition.  The Board seems to be seeing the light about blindly approving charter schools that don’t achieve the objectives they purport to achieve.
