Artwork Encourages Healthy Eating

What better way to get the community involved in a healthy routine than to express it with a larger than life visual?  Working Partnerships USA recently partnered with the Health Trust and Empire 7 Studios to paint a mural on the side of the First Street Market. As part of the Healthy Corner Stores initiative, this project focused on getting community members involved in the construction of the mural.

Working Partnerships and the Health Trust spoke to dozens of store owners in low income neighborhoods encouraging their participation in the ‘Good to Go’ campaign. The addition of healthy foods for sale in these small markets is crucial for the surrounding community because of the overwhelming number of health problems among impoverished families related to unhealthy eating habits.  The convenient “corner stores”, which often take the place of supermarkets in low income neighborhoods, don’t always carry fresh fruits and vegetables.  This campaign aims to change that.

Healthy foods advocates, painters with Empire Seven Studios and neighborhood volunteers completed the mural in three days.

The ‘Good to Go’ campaign is spreading to corner stores throughout Santa Clara County.

Volunteers from both organizations, and painters from Empire 7 Studios, had the help of young volunteers from the neighborhood, to paint over 120 feet of the outside wall of the market located at 748 South First St.   Getting young people involved in movements like this allows them to experience real life leadership in their own communities, and hopefully will forge a greater willingness to improving the lives of those around them.
