City of Santa Clara

Public surveys on proposed Minimum Wage Ordinance

The steady roll out of municipal minimum wage ordinances continues in Santa Clara with outreach for public opinion on their recent prioritization of a local wage ordinance. The ordinance includes increasing the minimum wage to $11 on January 1, 2016 and linking future increases to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), with the possibility of joining Sunnyvale and Mountain View at a higher regional wage.

Santa Clara wants to hear from you. There are two surveys open to the public, one for business owners and managers and one for employees and individuals. Both surveys can be found here: http://santaclaraca.gov/index.aspx?page=3121.

The City of Santa Clara should be commended for moving in the right direction on Minimum Wage and their efforts to keep the public engaged in the process, though online polls aren’t always the best at pulling in accurate answers. Good luck Santa Clara and mind the trolls.

City of Palo Alto

Buena Vista Mobile Home Park gets a possible lifeline

In the battle to save the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park, the Palo Alto City Council is looking to pony up $8 million dollars to add to the money that the County Board of Supervisors recently earmarked for the preservation of the mobile home park. The funds would go towards preserving Buena Vista for the approximately 400 current residents, with the City of Palo Alto and the County joining forces to cobble together a market-rate offer to buy out the current owner.

It’s heartening to find public servants fighting to preserve affordable housing, especially when it affects a large number of people who won’t likely have many options to stay in the area should the park close. For more information, check out the Friends of Buena Vista

Santa Clara County Board of Education

County Superintendent Evaluation

The County Board Of Education is taking up a public employee performance evaluation of Superintendent John Gundy, who is reaching his first full year as County Superintendent. This item will be in closed session.

Gundy isn’t without his share of controversy, but he has been a breath of fresh air in directing staff to carefully evaluate Charter Petitions. Gundy’s insistence on careful review of Charter Petitions has lead the staff to recommend more Charter School Petitions be denied than in any time in recent memory.
