The Santa Clara Valley Water District 1 seat, vacated by Dennis Kennedy due to his battle with cancer, has drawn a significant number of interested applicants, 21 to be exact.
Rich Constantine continues to be the most viable candidate, currently serving as a Morgan Hill Council Member. Another familiar name is Jeff Cristina, the Mayor of Campbell. If appointed, Cristina will have to step down as Mayor and relocate, since he lives outside of District 1.
Other notables who are running are John Varela, who is backed by the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, former San Jose City Councilman Forrest Williams and Erin Gil, current President of the Santa Clara County Farm Bureau.
The remaining candidates who have thrown their name into the ring are: Joseph Carrillo, Joe Cassibba, Fernando Huerta, Sr.,Tom Cruz, Ken Ragghanti, Glenn Stansbury, Rolando R. Alvarado, Charlie Andrews, Carol Fredrickson, Trina Hineser, Laura F. Quemada, John Haniotis, Jenny Derry, John B. Perez, D.D.S., Joe Eisenman and James Dill.
The Water District Board Members have until January 4, 2016 to make their appointment. After that, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is tasked with making the decision.
