The Skinny on City Council District 7

District 7 City Council Member Tam Nguyen, who is perceived by some to be a vulnerable incumbent, is facing a number of challengers in his bid for reelection. However, those throwing their hats into the District 7 race – Chris Le, Van Le and Thanh Tran –have obvious vulnerabilities of their own. Here’s a quick look.

  • Chris Le does not live in District 7. The law requires that candidates live in the district they are running to represent.
  • Van Le switched to the Democratic Party only months ago, burning bridges with many of her longtime Republican supporters.  She has run for the seat before, losing in the primary.
  • Thanh Tran, a first term school board member, would have to give up his current seat to enter a race that is already crowded with better-known Vietnamese candidates.

Also, Council Member Nguyen has delivered the two items that have long-been on the top of the Vietnamese community’s priority list – a community center and garden.

Although the Vietnamese community is hard on its own leaders and expects a great deal from them, Nguyen may be a stronger candidate for reelection than his detractors think.
