Early Campaign Fundraising Numbers Show Some Incumbents Running, Some Walking

The December fundraising numbers for incumbent City Council members and their challengers demonstrate a range of enthusiasm levels for the filthy lucre from high to no.  In Council District 1 Charles “Chappie” Jones raised $16,000 and loaned himself $10,000.  District 3 incumbent Raul Peralez raised an impressive $52,000.  District 5 Councilmember Magdalena Carrasco raised $42,000, but her challengers, Jennifer Imhoff-Dousharm and Danny Garza, raised no money.

Although he is not up for election, District 4 Councilmember Lan Diep was still dialing for dollars, only it was for his legal defense fund, not his reelection campaign.  Diep has raised $9,000 for his legal fight with former Councilman Manh Nguyen.  The Realtors, Apartment Association, Republic Services and several developers and construction companies made maximum contributions.  Not coincidentally, all those organizations had votes before the Council, including the city’s rent control ordinance, wage theft from city waste services workers and community workforce agreements for large public construction projects.
