Unlike other Silicon Valley firms, Tesla refuses to pay service workers during COVID-19

In Silicon Valley, nearly all the major tech companies have ensured that the people who cook, clean, protect, and transport workers to their campuses continue to receive their regular pay while they’ve been sent home. These commitments from some of the wealthiest corporations in the world have meant that thousands of people are able to put food on the table, maintain their healthcare coverage, and keep a roof over their family’s heads.

Tesla, however, has refused to take this approach. The corporation has told over 130 of its shuttle drivers and another 130 janitors at its Fremont plant that it will pay them nothing during the shutdown. Tesla’s actions have left these workers scrambling to figure out how they will pay the bills.

At the same time, Tesla’s share price has gone up 43% since April 1st. Year to date in 2020 CEO Elon Musk (who now owns 34.1 million shares) has seen his holdings increase in value by over $8.5 billion.

Since the furloughed workers are employed by subcontracting companies that also contract with other tech companies, Tesla’s refusal means that these people get nothing while their coworkers maintain their regular wages.
