The Fickle Nature of Manh Nguyen

One year ago Manh Nguyen secured his spot in the San Jose City Council District 4 runoff election against Tim Orozco by a mere 13 votes. While the margin was extremely slim, Manh won fair and square and Lan Diep, who came in third, accepted defeated and moved on.  Fast forward to the 2016 primary election and, in the most serendipitous turn of events, Lan has ousted Mahn by 12 votes. Yet, Manh isn’t going down quietly.

According to a Memorandum from Manh and his lawyer, the 12 vote difference is a “de facto tie,” not a win as was the case when Mahn secured his seat by 13 votes. The Memo makes two recommendations, both of which have been met with resistance.  First, the Memo states that the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters should “declare the election results for the June 7, 2016 San Jose City Council Fourth District City Council election to be uncertain and inconclusive, and that the results not be certified”.  Second, there is a recommendation that a “new election be conducted between candidates Mahn Nguyen and Lan Diep on November 8, 2016.”

So what do we learn from all of this? That Manh is a fickle character who is willing to change the rules to fit his needs. He was perfectly content beating his contender by 13 votes in 2015, but demands a new election when the tables are turned and he is beaten by 12 votes. Apparently, the voice of the constituents of District 4 only matter to Manh if he is in the victor’s seat.
